My name is Amer Sheikh and I am the Principal at Amer Sheikh Accounting & Tax. Determining a good fit with your accountant is, in my opinion the the most important factor to consider when selecting an accounting firm. Accountants provide more or less the same type of services, so personality plays a huge role in determining the success of the firm-client relationship. Continue to read on to learn more about my education, experience and background so that you can evaluate for yourself how I am the right fit for your small business’ accounting needs.
Education – I graduated from The University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce – Specialist in Accounting and Finance, Major in Economics and Minor in Philosophy.
The benefits of the my Specialist and Major are obvious as they directly impact my career and business. My Minor in philosophy developed my analytical thinking skills. Through my coursework I learned to consider all different perspectives and see the bigger picture of the issue presented. Studying philosophy also taught me that there is more than one way to approach and resolve a problem. I use this approach when working with clients to provide them with advice and solutions for their accounting, tax, consulting and training needs.
I am a Chartered Professional Accountant and concurrently a Certified General Accountant (CPA, CGA) approved by CPA Ontario to provide accounting services in the province. I am a Member and Firm in Good Standing.
To keep my skills sharp I have continually upgraded my skills to serve my clients’ changing needs. I am a Quickbooks ProAdvisor as well as a Certified Freshbooks Accountant.

Career – Having worked for several organizations of different sizes, industries and sectors in the economy I have accumulated more 15 years of progressive experience solving challanges that these organizations faced.
These are the organizations I have worked with:
- Region of Peel (Government)
- Orlando Corporation (Privately held, Real Estate Development and Construction firm)
- Sunquest Vacations (Privately held, Leisure Travel Firm)
- Loblaw Companies (Publically held, Retailer)
- Torys LLP (Privately held, Law Firm)
- PRACS Institute/Cetero Research (Privately held, Medical research firm)
- Canadian Tire Corp (Publically held, Retailer)
- General Electric (Publically held, Digital Energy Division)
- Kirchhoff Van Rob (Privately held, Automotive parts manufacturer)
Throughout my career I have had the unique perspective of observing issues and challenges through management and ownership’s eyes. In my roles I was tasked with addressing the problems the organizations faced and provided solutions that were effective, efficient, practical and measureable.
Most accounting firms have a retrospective point of view; they give opinions about what happened in the past and assess whether financial statements are presented fairly, accurately and completely. Little, if any time is spent on operational improvement advice.
My experience on the other hand is best suited to the needs of small business. My perspective is more forward looking and focused on improving clients’ day-to-operations. This allows me to put myself in the owner’s position and see what they see. Then I take a step back and observe the issue from a professional accountant’s perspective and advise on the best approach for the situation.
I am driven by a passion to help small-businesses like yours succeed. Being a small business owner myself, I can understand the challanges you face and appreciate how tough it can be to acheive your goals. I incoporate my big business experience and provide results that are scalable to your small business without the big budget requirements – it’s a win-win for you!
